Frequently Asked Questions
1. Where are you located?
I am located in Bankers Hill. From there I can easily reach any part of the county. Have laptop will travel!
2. Who do you service?
McCarthy Bookkeeping Services provides bookkeeping and accounting services to small business as well as individuals and professionals.
3. How long have you been in business?
I’ve been doing accounting for over twenty five years. I can still remember working on an IBM AT running at a screaming 8 mHz with its yellow monochrome monitor. As an accountant working in a multinational corporation, friends and acquaintances would ask if I could do their taxes. Once I gave in to some tax work moonlighting, I soon found myself being asked if I could help out someone get their small business’s books in order. It wasn’t long before my day job was getting in the way and had to go!
4. Can’t I do my own bookkeeping?
You sure can. But how late do you want to stay in the office after the front door closes? Will you be ready for tax season at the end of the year? Did you really make a profit or did you just end up with money in the bank and aren’t sure? Did you get into business so you can use up all your time? You may have to hire a bookkeeper to correct all your previous mistakes and put you on even keel before you can continue.
Having accurate, timely financial information is an important part of the decision making process. You can’t decide to do something next month if you don’t know how you did last month. Keeping your books up to date will give you that financial information. McCarthy Bookkeeping Services can get you that information regularly to help you know how your business is performing. Give yourself back your peace of mind.
5. Why should I hire you to do my books?
I can help you avoid some of the common bookkeeping errors small business owners make. Although the b bookkeeping may seem easy at the beginning, I can help you get on track so your books are consistent as your business grows. This will help you analyze changes over the years and track your progress.
Some owners start inputting information from their bank statement instead of using it as a check against what was previously input.
When you get busy, it’s easy to put aside the bookwork for the sake of running your business. Also, because you know everything that goes on, it’s easy to buy goods or services with cash or a personal credit card and then forget to record those transactions in the business books. This will give you an inflated profit.
I’ve seen some businesses organize their expense accounts alphabetically instead of by categories such as direct, indirect and administrative. I can help you see what you’re actually spending your money on.
6. Can you do my taxes?
Yes, I can. I specialize in taxes for sole proprietors and S Corps. If you already have a CPA doing your taxes, I can get your books in order and ready to hand to your CPA and save you the money they would charge to organize your books.
7. How much do your services cost?
I charge $35 for regular bookkeeping work. If all you need is payroll for a few employees a couple of times a month, I can calculate how long that would take and quote you a price. After a few months, I will have a general idea of how long it should take to do you books and can then quote you a monthly price.
8. Will I lose control of my financial decision making?
No, my services help guide you and provide the information necessary in your financial decision making process. I won’t tell you what to do but I can help you determine the financial consequences of your decisions. A lawn mowing company run out of the owner’s garage wanted to know how much an ATM with a snow plow would cost to help determine if he should expand his business to include driveway snow plowing in the winter.
